Joyia, is a Toronto-based R&B singer, writer, producer, and composer. People have compared her to the likes of Aaliyah, H.E.R., Jhené Aiko, and Sabrina Claudio, but somehow still place her in her own distinct category. With two releases under her belt, and plans for a full-length project, her unique sound will soon be breaking through the city.
She began vocal and piano lessons at the age of 10, and began writing at 13. While a brief turn towards electronic music taught her fundamental elements of production in her mid-teens, she refined her musical style about two years ago when she returned to her early soul, jazz, and R&B influences. Through performances around the city at venues like the Phoenix Concert Theatre, the Drake Underground, and Longboat Hall, fans have strongly connected with the personal stories she shares through her music.
So far, Joyia has released the Wednesday EP as a collaborative project with Toronto artists HMLT and Kei-li, but this soul-funk record is very different than the darker R&B/soul she has released with her first solo project - Legends. Executively produced by Corey of HMLT, the 3-song EP fuses hip-hop, jazz, and both live and electronic dark R&B sounds with Joyia’s refined vocal style; one that feels all too familiar yet indisputably new. Legends has already garnered acclaim from Complex, Sidewalk Hustle, and Exclaim Magazine, and has been featured on Spotify’s Just Vibing playlist. She is currently working with collaborators to build a solid repertoire, which she is planning to release this upcoming year. Legends is only the beginning for Joyia - there’s much more to come.
